Loituma

Loituma

The group Loituma was formed in 1989 when the new students of that year started their studies in the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department. The group of seven first called themselves Jäykkä Leipä (Stiff Bread). The line-up has since been reduced to four-man group which now releases its first record. Loituma has persevered in its own style skillfully adapting influences from other sources. It has bravely plunged into the most turbulent currents of music.

One of the cornerstones of Finnish folk music is the skill of song. Stories and feelings are best expressed with man's own instrument. All the members of the group sing, and song is the underlying current in the music of Loituma. Another cornerstone, the kantele, resounds with unbelievable beauty and versatility. The clinking of iron and silver is balanced by the silent flowering of rye and wheat. The songs carry the Finnish tradition with the two good genie Martti Pokela and Toivo Alaspää as its mediators.

Throughout the years Loituma has reaped a fine crop of songs. The table is set. Enjoy the harvest!
