Tan Longjian was born in Nanjing, the Republic of China on the year of the dragon 1952. She began to study traditional Chinese music at the age of twelve at the conservatory of Chinese Music in Peking. She also studied at the Central Conservatory of China in Peking.

Tan Longjian graduated from the department of folk music at the Central Conservatory of China in 1982. She has taught at Tianjin Conservatory and holds a post as a lecturer at the Central Conservatory. In the autumn of 1990 Tan Longjian came to Finland to study at the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department. During her studies she has performed all over Finland in more than twenty concerts. She graduated from Sibelius Academy in December 1994.
