Tyttörinki

Duo Emilia Lajunen & Suvi Oskala
121

In the past this music was performed by the best fiddlers of their time, men proud of their skills when a university educated enthusiast came to their house to record their art. Here and now this music is played by two young, beautiful women. They also think that this music is the best they have to offer together. This is why their music builds a bridge between the black and white photographs of past musicians and the colourful urban folk musicians of today. The passing of time creates tension.

But the extraordinary tension in this music doesn't just come by on its own. It has to be made. Suvi and Emilia have arranged the harmonies for their ten strings, played around the tunes antil they locked into the same groove, while also making themselves heard within the tradition.

Did the old fiddlers know they were playing music that would last through all these years? I think they did.
