Anna-Kaisa Liedes

I started my postgraduate studies at the Academy in 1998. I will complete my Doctor of Arts in Music degree on the varieties of the human voice in spring 2005 with the support of the Finnish Cultural Foundation. The degree comprises a thesis and five concerts, three of which I have already given: 23 May 1999 Journeys to the world of music, solo work; 28 September 2000 Voice/Signal (with percussionist Petri Korpela); 17 and 20 October 2002 The world is a voice (with bassist Ari-Pekka Anttila, flutist Leena Joutsenlahti, and voice artist Juha Valkeapää. This etno.net recording has the fourth part of my degree, Äänikuvia (Sound Images).

Voice – picture – image – memory

In the concert "Sound Images" Anna-Kaisa Liedes tells stories and creates atmospheres with her voice, accompanied by the illusions evoked by Timo Väänänen's electric kantele and Abdissa "Mamba" Assefa's percussive visions. A sound evokes a sound, an image, a memory – an emotion another emotion – growing into a soundscape, which every listener will hear in his or her own way.

The "Sound Images" concert series was given at Malmitalo concert hall on 19-21 November 2003. As a kantele player and singer, I am intrigued by the combination of the kantele and voice, two instruments with a very rich resonance. In this series, I wanted to find different sounds and new opportunities created by harmonics in both instruments. The music turned into a journey from ancient times to the future. The works reflect the minimalism of traditional kantele or church bells combined with the modern effects of the electric kantele, colourfulness of percussion and the human voice.

The other musicians in the group are Abdissa Assefa, percussion and Timo Väänänen, kantele. The background sounds were designed by Teemu Korpipää and lighting by Sauli Närhi. The concert was recorded and mixed by Marko Myöhänen. The concert was performed against the backdrop of a silent film from 1927 about a wedding in Karelia and photographs from collections of the National Board of Antiquities and Finnish Literature Society.

The concert was supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Kalevala Cultural Foundation, Kalevala Society (film), Finnish Literature Society (photographs), National Board of Antiquities (photographs), the Wood in Culture Association and the Sibelius Academy Department of Folk Music.
