1959 Ever since the 1980s, Alakotila has greatly influenced the musical expression of Finnish folk music in terms of harmonies and arrangements. He has played the piano and harmonium in JPP, Troka, Maria Kalaniemi & Aldargaz and in the duo Karen Tweed & Timo Alakotila.
Besides being a musician, Alakotila is a productive composer, arranger and producer. He is also a popular teacher. He has been on the teaching staff of Sibelius Academy’s Department of Folk Music since the 1980s. In his teaching profession, Alakotila focuses on developing teaching methods and materials for folk music improvisation.
